Manufacturing technology orders down in June

June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $426.83 million according to AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 5.8% from May and down 5.7% when compared with the total of $452.75 million reported for June 2012. With a year-to-date total of $2,538.55 million, 2013 is down 5.7% compared with 2012. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTO program. “It’s typical for orders to experience a modest drop going into the summer months, and we’ve seen this lull in six of the past nine summers. It’s important to remember that in the overall picture, this is a very strong order level,” said Douglas K. Woods, AMT President. “Manufacturing is still the key area driving the economy. With durable goods orders at a record level of $244 billion in June, and the Purchasing Managers’ Index at 55, we expect manufacturing technology orders to hold steady through the end of the year.”The United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report, compiled by the trade association representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, provides regional and national U.S. orders data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufacturing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.  U.S. manufacturing technology orders are also reported on a regional basis for six geographic breakdowns of the United States.  

Northeast Region  June manufacturing technology orders in the Northeast Region totaled $66.29 million, down 21.8% when compared with May’s $84.80 million and off 3.5% from the total for June 2012. With a year-to-date total of $403.45 million, 2013 is up 1.3% when compared with 2012 at the same time.

Southeast Region Southeast Region manufacturing technology orders in June stood at $49.75 million, up 12.2% from May’s $44.36 million but 24.0% less than the total for June 2012. The $233.75 million year-to-date total is 15.0% lower than the comparable figure for 2012.  

North Central-East Region  Manufacturing technology orders in the North Central-East Region in June totaled $112.90 million, up 9.3% when compared with May’s $103.32 million and 6.0% more than the June 2012 total. At $654.66 million, 2013 year-to-date is 6.0% less than the total for 2012 at the same time.

North Central-West Region North Central-West Region manufacturing technology orders totaled $78.13 million in June, up slightly from the $77.45 million tallied in May but down 6.5% when compared with June 2012. The year-to-date total of $489.65 million is 0.6% lower than the comparable figure for 2012.

South Central Region At $62.86 million, June manufacturing technology orders in the South Central Region were down 3.6% when compared with the $65.23 million total for May and down 15.7% when compared with June a year ago. With a year-to-date total of $383.01 million, 2013 is down 22.6% when compared with 2012 at the same time.  

West Region West Region manufacturing technology orders in June totaled $56.91 million, 27.2% lower than May’s $78.15 million but up 5.7% when compared with the total for June 2012. With a year-to-date total of $374.03 million, 2013 is up 11.7% when compared with 2012 at the same time.
