Crown Equipment Corporation will share some of its best practices for reducing waste and minimizing environmental impacts when it hosts the Sustainable Manufacturer Network’s Zero-Waste-to-Landfill Workshop in New Bremen, Ohio, on October 16.

As part of the event, Tonja Rammel, Crown Equipment’s environmental, health and safety manager, will outline elements of the company’s sustainability commitment and share best practices. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to tour Crown’s New Knoxville facility to see zero-waste-to-landfill initiatives that are helping to make operations more sustainable, eco-friendly and profitable. The event will include speakers from the Ohio EPA Pollution Prevention Team, Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., Nexeo Solutions and Waste Management.

“Achieving zero-waste-to-landfill can be a daunting task, especially for manufacturers with multiple facilities,” said Rammel. “Although the initial work to implement these efforts can be challenging, we’ve found that as sustainability is engrained into a company’s approach to business, it becomes a part of the company’s culture, as well. Our employees have played a major role in all of our sustainability efforts, and I’m looking forward to sharing our initiatives and successes with attendees at this year’s workshop.”

Crown uses an integrated manufacturing approach to provide complete control over the design and manufacturing process, which helps to ensure the satisfaction of customers and supports the company’s ongoing sustainability commitment. Crown designs and manufactures up to 85 percent of the parts used in its lift trucks, including electric motors, drive units, valve bodies, masts, power units, cylinders, electronic modules, wire harnesses, forks, seats and more.

Crown has made numerous efforts to minimize waste, manage energy and maximize lifespan throughout its operations, including its manufacturing facilities. Three of its locations are zero landfill facilities, including its New Knoxville manufacturing facility, Crown’s electronics plant and its Dayton, Ohio, branch. New Knoxville has been a zero landfill facility since 2009 and was recognized earlier this year with the first-ever, gold-level award in Ohio EPA’s Encouraging Environmental Excellence (?3) program.

Crown’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident throughout numerous aspects of its operations. The company releases an annual Crown ecologic Report highlighting the company’s sustainability initiatives and accomplishments.

The Sustainable Manufacturer Network (SMN) is an affiliate of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl. The mission of SMN is to be the principal resource for advancement of cost-effective, environmentally, and socially responsible manufacturing. Registration for the Zero-Waste-to-Landfill workshop is available through October 15 on the Sustainable Manufacturer Network website.
