“As we celebrate 50 years of innovation, we are reminded that success comes from staying curious, embracing change, and learning from the challenges of the past. These values will guide us into the future,” said Veli-Matti Hakala, CEO of Cimcorp.

Automating logistics and tire manufacturing with first-class solutions

Cimcorp has covered many areas during its five decades, from automotive and picture tubes to paint and logistics. Versatility has been the key to expanding into growing industries as well as adapting to the changing world. Cimcorp reached a pivotal point in the 2000s, breaking into the tire manufacturing industry, as well as warehousing and distribution. Since then, Cimcorp has honed its focus on developing innovative solutions for the tire and logistics sectors. This has allowed Cimcorp to dive deep into the unique needs and challenges of each industry, ensuring solutions and services are built with the client and their business in mind.

Technology first created in the 1980s has proved essential to Cimcorp’s core industries today. Modular robotic systems offer tire manufacturers much-needed flexibility and scalability. In the logistics space, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) have revolutionized warehouse operations with rapid handling of goods. Cimcorp’s MultiPick system, an automated gantry able to pick stacks as well as individual crates or items, is a key component of success in both areas.

“The MultiPick started out as sketches on a piece of graph paper. It felt great to see the first ones be sold to companies such as Hartwall, Valio and Fazer. The concept remains valid to this day,” said Tero Peltomäki, former CEO of Cimcorp, who led the company from 2021 to 2024.

A history of growth in the global automation market

Global expansion has been an integral part of Cimcorp’s identity. Cimcorp’s presence in Finland and North America dates back to its origin as Rosenlew’s internal tool factory. When Cimcorp was acquired by Wärtsilä 1986, the company continued to expand into international markets and diversify its product offerings. Ten years later, acquisition by Swisslog Holding AG gave Cimcorp greater resources and a broader market reach to solidify its position as a global leader in automation. In 2014, Cimcorp became a member of Murata Machinery Ltd., one of the world’s largest logistics automation suppliers.

Over the years, Cimcorp has established a worldwide network of offices across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Global reach has enabled the company to offer local support with an international foundation. Cimcorp’s most recent expansion took place in the UK market.

“Our strategic starting point has always been that whatever we do with automation, the domestic market is too small. If we wish to grow, we need to pick a clear focus and take it abroad,” said former CEO Kari Ollila, who led Cimcorp from 1987 to 2007.

As Cimcorp looks ahead to its next 50 years, the company continues to focus on innovation and global growth. “To foresee and prepare for the future, we must understand the past. It is through reflecting on our journey that we find the tools to shape tomorrow,” said Hakala.
