Russell Johnston of Handling Specialty to Receive Prestigious Award

The Council of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists has awarded Russell Johnston, of Handling Specialty, the George Burwash Langford Memorial award in recognition of outstanding technical expertise while working at Handling Specialty and actively mentoring the next generation of engineering technologists.

As an Engineer, George Burwash Langford felt a strong sense of public responsibility that led him into many fields of interest including starting the Great Lakes Institute and helping develop the Canadian mining industry.

Russell Johnston, Handling Specialty’s Advanced Engineering Specialist, will have been with the company for 20 years as of August 2019, and held several roles as he’s worked to excel in each, improving his own skills while helping drive Handling Specialty ahead in engineering, design and status.

“I would like to thank and express my gratitude to all those involved in nominating me for this award.” said Russell Johnston. “Thank you to Nathan Field who came forward with this idea and carried it through.  Thank you to Tom Beach and to Shannon Clinton for the kind words in your nomination letters, and to Michelle Guest for coordinating and supporting this. Just being nominated was amazing, but to actually be chosen by OACETT for this award is truly humbling. Johnston added.

Johnston also acknowledged his employer, “Thank you Handling Specialty – twenty years ago, you gave a new graduate a chance to learn and develop, and to grow over many years. It’s not easy for new graduates to get their first job because they have limited experience, and I very much appreciate the opportunity you gave me.  I have learned an incredible amount from many colleagues over the years, notably Rick Bailey and Jacek Kaminski.  Thank you both for being my mentors, and I will always be grateful for all that you have taught me. Receiving the George Burwash Langford Memorial Award is a great honor and a highlight of my career!”
