U.S. rail traffic reports for the week ending April 12, 2025

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has reported U.S. rail traffic for April 12, 2025.

For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 491,908 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.4 percent compared with the same week last year.

Total carloads for the week ending April 12 were 217,566 carloads, up 4.3 percent compared with the same week in 2024, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 274,342 containers and trailers, up 6.3 percent compared with 2024.

Three of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2024. They were coal, up 6,279 carloads, to 51,600; grain, up 3,632 carloads, to 24,119; and miscellaneous carloads, up 1,052 carloads, to 9,511. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2024 included petroleum and petroleum products, down 618 carloads, to 9,778; nonmetallic minerals, down 544 carloads, to 31,076; and farm products excl. grain, and food, down 392 carloads, to 16,611.

For the first 15 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads reported a cumulative volume of 3,219,891 carloads, up 0.9 percent from the same point last year; and 4,088,865 intermodal units, up 8.5 percent from last year. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 15 weeks of 2025 was 7,308,756 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 5.0 percent compared to last year.

North American rail volume for the week ending April 12, 2025, on 9 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 325,409 carloads, up 2.3 percent compared with the same week last year, and 362,043 intermodal units, up 5.3 percent compared with last year. Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 687,452 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.9 percent. North American rail volume for the first 15 weeks of 2025 was 10,051,332 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.3 percent compared with 2024.

Canadian railroads reported 93,003 carloads for the week, up 1.1 percent, and 76,096 intermodal units, up 4.3 percent compared with the same week in 2024. For the first 15 weeks of 2025, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 2,390,505 carloads, containers and trailers, up 0.3 percent.

Mexican railroads reported 14,840 carloads for the week, down 15.9 percent compared with the same week last year, and 11,605 intermodal units, down 9.0 percent. Cumulative volume on Mexican railroads for the first 15 weeks of 2025 was 352,071 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers, down 9.5 percent from the same point last year.
