New Appleton fixture is game changer for emergency egress lighting

Listen to this article

Appleton has expanded its LED lighting line to include the N2LED emergency egress LED fixture, boasting a design that is more than fifty percent smaller and lighter than traditional models, yet offering up to 130 lumens of illumination per lamp while consuming 75% less power.

Enclosed and gasketed for industrial and marine use, the N2LED provides superior lighting for safe egress through doors, aisle-ways, stairs, walkways, exit paths, and outer perimeter walls during interruption of normal power. It is capable of providing up to 180 minutes of emergency operation with no degradation of light quality, delivering the absolute reliability needed in critical situations. Typical applications include hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present, such as manufacturing facilities, refineries or chemical plants, and non-hazardous locations where dirt, corrosion or dust would damage ordinary lighting.

Among the features that make the new N2LED a success are an integrated illuminated “push” test button that gives users an instant status indicator, along with automatic self-diagnostics that check the battery, lamps and load transfer circuitry every 30 days. During emergency operation, the battery is protected from deep discharge damage by a low-voltage disconnect (LVD) circuit that automatically disconnects and reconnects the load, based on battery condition.

Other emergency light designs feature lamps that are not adjustable unless custom ordered. Competitor’s models also may require users perform a time-consuming field seal. Instead, the Appleton N2LED comes standard with up to four 1.5W LED lamps with fully adjustable heads so that light can be directed where it is needed most. The system is available with a master unit with or without two light heads, and in remote units with one or two light heads. The flexible design allows for systems to be precisely configured to light up to four different areas, depending on application needs.

The N2LED is ruggedly built from compression molded, fiberglass reinforced polyester formed with a continuous silicone gasket. It is rated for NEC Class I, Div. 2 areas (A, B, C, D), and for Class I, Zone 2 IIC rated applications.  In addition to industrial use, it is NEMA Type 4X and IP66 for deployment outside or in marine applications.
