Longtime Jeffers Crane Service GM retires

After 32 years, Butch Bucher calls it a career

A fixture at Jeffers Crane Service, a member of the ALL Family of Companies, is hanging up his hard hat after 32 years. Jeffers’ general manager Butch Bucher’s last day on the job will be Thursday, July 2, 2020.

Bucher’s professional life actually began in construction in 1966, as he worked part-time while still in high school. He eventually transitioned to the crane business in the 1970s, working while he attended college and then taking a brief break for military service. By the 1980s, he was manager of the Lima, Ohio, yard for what was then known as Tilton Corp. He was promoted to general manager and moved to Toledo in 1991, and Tilton was purchased by ALL four years later. Bucher stayed with the company and continued his remarkable career, remaining as GM until his retirement.

Over the years, Bucher successfully navigated the changing waters of the crane industry as technology improved, capacities increased, and the pace of work rapidly accelerated. Through it all, Bucher captained Jeffers with a steady hand, humble demeanor, and an unpretentious get-it-done philosophy.

ALL President Michael L. Liptak says Bucher is a salt-of-the-earth kind of person. “Butch’s word is rock solid; he does what he says and says what he does,” said Liptak. “We’re lucky to have had his leadership and knowledge for so long.”

Serving in a senior role for decades, Bucher earned a reputation as a no-nonsense manager with a straightforward personal style. “There are times when you have to be tough and your decisions won’t be popular,” said Bucher. “But when you’ve got a great group around you and everyone’s in the boat rowing together, that tough side is seldom needed. I’ve had a great crew that’s collaborated to get things done.”

In retirement, Butch had originally planned to travel. COVID-19 has changed those plans, but he’s hopeful to get back on the move next year. In the meantime, he’ll engage in hobbies such as reading and photography, and he’ll keep busy tackling a few projects around the house.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity that the ALL family gave me,” said Butch. “I sincerely couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work for and work with. I’ve been truly blessed.”

Stepping in to assume Jeffers’ general manager’s duties from Butch is Marty Bowman, a 16-year veteran of ALL who cut his teeth as a crane operator, moved up the ranks, and most recently served as the Lima branch manager for the past four years. When asked about advice he’d give to Bowman, Bucher said, “Be honest, be fair, and be forthright. These are qualities Marty has, and it will serve him well as the next GM.”
