Thomson Industries, Inc. has announced the availability of an enhanced synchronization option for its Electrak® HD smart electric linear actuator. The new iteration of this control option implements position-based synchronization within the actuators’ onboard electronics for modern motion control applications requiring instant load balancing of multiple Electrak HD units. “We worked closely with industrial equipment builders who need dynamic and reliable load synchronization and redesigned our controls to meet their demands. By incorporating advanced position sensing and communication capabilities, we have streamlined the process of synchronizing multiple actuators. This enhancement helps users achieve increased efficiency, strength and safety in heavy-duty applications,” said Violet Urban, Product Manager at Thomson. Actuators in lockstep The synchronization option can support up to eight Electrak HD actuators that connect in real time across a CAN bus network, ensuring operation in perfect harmony. A constant heartbeat signal in each actuator maintains position awareness for all units. If one actuator senses a heavier load, it will signal to the others to slow their speed to maintain the same position. Only in the instance of a fault (loss of communication or power, or excessive voltage or temperature) on one or more of the actuators will the entire system shut down. This instant communication prevents binding or buckling, enhancing reliability and safety. Unlike most other position-based actuators, which require space-consuming external controls, the Electrak HD embeds all synchronization functionality into its built-in electronics, making the system truly plug and play. All mounted and wired actuators can begin synchronizing immediately following installation. The Electrak HD can handle loads of up to 16 kN, making it a popular choice for applications where hydraulic cylinders were traditionally used. Its improved synchronization capabilities make the HD particularly suitable for systems that require dynamic load balancing and position control—features that are not achievable with conventional hydraulic cylinders. The synchronizing option is beneficial for many applications that are challenged with awkward or unbalanced loads, including: Work platforms, where the system must maintain a level surface, as workers change position. Automated material handling where multiple actuators help move products smoothly along conveyor belts or on an automated guided vehicle. Packaging automation where multiple actuators position items and stack products. Solar panels, where multiple actuators help raise, lower and tilt heavy loads in sync and protect them from structural damage. The enhanced synchronization option is available immediately when ordering the Thomson Electrak HD. For more information, visit https://www.thomsonlinear.com/

Distribution center technology provider, Lucas Systems, has announced its new software enhancements to help warehouses make quicker and more effective decisions as it relates to order batching and prioritization, warehouse worker travel, and slotting. With the addition of new powerful algorithms and digital twin mapping of the warehouse, Lucas Systems’ next-generation Dynamic Work Optimization (DWO) delivers more effective warehouse performance by considering in-the-moment complexities related to order priority, SKU clustering, proximity and warehouse layout. Additionally, the enhanced software promises a reduction (up to 50%) in the number of steps workers take inside the warehouse by optimizing pick paths in a way that considers the least amount of travel time required. Pick path recommendations now factor in the effect of forklifts and cherry pickers, and Lucas Systems says these details matter. In recent months, Lucas Systems executives have announced ‘dynamically-driven’ technologies to help warehouse operators quickly adapt to changing operational conditions or shifts in demand. Lucas Systems’ Dynamic Slotting technologies is an example of one of these technologies. Announced earlier this year, its benefit is to simplify re-slotting by providing in-the-moment recommendations, powered by AI. It applies machine-learning algorithms to recommend which products should be moved. It also learns the spatial characteristics of a warehouse and predicts task time based on activity-level data. The model then continues to ‘learn’, providing continuous optimization as conditions change. Lucas Systems says warehouse agility is key to a company’s future growth and is necessary in these times. They’ve outlined their vision for creating a dynamically-driven warehouse in their new report, The Transformational Promise of the Dynamic Warehouse. The report includes customer insights and new strategies and considerations for change. Lucas Systems CMO Ken Ramoutar says, “You cannot future-proof your warehouse with fixed or mechanical automation. Rising supply chain volatility requires adaptive operations with in-the-moment smart decision support. The more agile your operations are, the more you’ll be able to capitalize on opportunities and minimize the impact of disruptions and then course correct them.” Ramoutar describes a dynamic warehouse as having the smart software and decision-making technology to: Be self-optimizing – make real-time optimized decisions on work execution, priorities, and labor assignments Enable managers to quickly implement change upon learning new insights Efficiently optimize the use of warehouse resources, including the workforce Allow new automation such as robotics to be introduced and orchestrated seamlessly Cost-efficiently adapt to changes in demand profiles, supply disruption, and resource availability Ramoutar adds, “The agility from smart software will help warehouses respond – cost-effectively – to supply chain disruptions and other fluctuating market dynamics. Warehouses that aren’t dynamic will face significant long-term challenges with warehouse performance and more demanding customer service levels.”

Encryption solution safeguards against unapproved internal or external personnel accessing critical or proprietary information. Schreiner Group, Schreiner PrinTrust, and Schreiner ProTech, now offer hardware security modules (HSMs) to provide its customers with comprehensive data protection for RFID-enabled systems. Available through the company’s Schreiner PrinTrust segment, the encryption solution safeguards against unapproved internal or external personnel accessing critical or proprietary information. RFID is used to ensure item traceability and identification In a variety of industries. Despite the obvious benefits, one potential drawback to this technology’s proliferation is increased risks for security gaps. Schreiner Group’s HSM solution comprises a small dark box resembling a conventional industrial PC. This device generates, stores and manages cryptographic keys that protect sensitive data against unauthorized access and tampering. Compared to strictly software-based solutions, HSMs offer enhanced protection because sensitive information is coded and contained on-site in the specialized hardware. This approach provides added security and protection against unauthorized access. Schreiner Group’s solution also stands out for its agnosticism. Many hardware-based systems utilize symmetric encryption (also known as “secret-key encryption”), a process that uses only one key for encryption and decryption. While this approach is praised for its simplicity and efficiency, data is in acute jeopardy of being compromised if the key falls into unintended hands. Other systems utilize asymmetric encryption, a concept employing a different key for encryption and decryption; this approach offers higher security but, accordingly, requires higher computing power. Using Schreiner ProTech’s HSMs, both encryption methods can be easily and securely implemented without their noted drawbacks. “A project’s security is only as strong as the weakest link in the overall system,” said Dr. Kai Schnapauff, President of Schreiner PrinTrust. “We’re in the advantageous position of offering our customers a holistic security concept with auditable standards. In addition to the hardware security modules, it encompasses the integration of suitable, secure RFID chips and, of course, our in-house ISO 14298-certified security production. As a result, the sensitive keys enjoy perpetual, highly secure protection against access from both external and internal parties.” In an era when data security is becoming increasingly mission-critical, Schreiner Group’s HSM solutions promote maximum security, trustworthiness, and reliability. Implementing these robust information security tools helps companies convey that they take data access seriously – and take proactive measures to assure it.

The offering gives warehouses and logistics businesses the flexibility to scale their operations to meet fluctuating demands during the peak retail season. ProGlove has launched its new on-demand rental program for its MARK wearable scanner. This unique program offers short-term rentals of ProGlove’s MARK range of smart scanners. The goal is to give logistics and warehouse operators the flexibility to scale operations to meet demand during peak periods without the long-term financial commitment that comes with traditional expansion methods. Warehouses face mounting pressure to adapt to fluctuating demands and supply chain disruptions, especially with the approaching holiday season. Companies often cannot predict demand surges far enough in advance to commit to large-scale seasonal hiring. It is crucial to implement technological safeguards that support existing staff, reduce workload strain, and minimize the risk of sickness, injury, or turnover. The combination of earlier shopping habits and changing consumer expectations has created another challenging environment for logistics operations. Operators are increasingly relying on a seasonal workforce to maintain efficiency amid surging workloads, but integrating these temporary workers effectively can be equally complex especially when operating at peak capacity. High stock levels, repetitive movements and higher worker concentration all contribute to the risk of workplace hazards. ProGlove’s short-term device rental addresses this growing challenge by making its wearable devices available on demand. This flexibility allows businesses to dynamically adjust their hardware needs, scaling up or down as required during peak times without the commitment of a long-term contract. As part of the offering, customers can also get to access ProGlove’s software solution, which captures and analyzes operational data in real-time. With that, managers can access crucial insights to optimize workflows, identify bottlenecks, and even proactively address potential ergonomic risks through worker activity patterns. “The holiday season is no longer confined to December. With Christmas merchandise appearing as early as September, retailers and their suppliers are facing an extended period of peak demand. As a result, warehouse operators face growing pressure to meet expedited deadlines. To navigate this challenge successfully, businesses must prioritize accuracy, agility, and efficiency in their operations. At ProGlove, we’re committed to empowering warehouses with the tools they need to thrive during this crucial period,” said Suzana Tasic, Senior Product Manager at ProGlove. “We understand the delicate balance between managing hardware costs while ensuring optimal warehouse performance. Our short-term rental solution is here to offer a flexible and cost-effective way for warehouse operators and retailers to address the unique demands of the season. By renting our MARK line of scanners, businesses can quickly and easily supercharge their operations without the long-term commitment of purchasing new equipment. Our intuitive devices are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing systems with minimal training required so there’s hardly any downtime and maximum productivity.” The short-term rental offering will be available from today. Customers renting the solution will also receive a comprehensive, all-in-one package, comprising of MARK scanners of their choice for the rental period, access to the Insight platform, device chargers, connectivity devices, and ProGlove Care – ProGlove’s coverage service.

Signaling and indicator lights, switches, and buttons – elements that hardly any machine can do without. The new JW Winco cabinet U-handle EN 6284 integrates all these functions into a single, compact element. The U-handle is designed to enhance the operation of systems and machines. It features an integrated button and a large, colored, backlit area on the back of the handle. These elements can be used individually or in combination, providing a versatile tool for system control and process monitoring. The EN 6284 prioritizes safety in its design. The two-channel switch element, available in different contact configurations, enhances operational safety. It can handle a wide range of applications with DC and AC voltages from 24 to 240 volts and currents of up to 3 amperes, ensuring compatibility with various systems and machines. The light element on the back of the handle comprises a form-fitting diffusor made of robust polycarbonate that is tightly attached with an IP 67 protection rating. It homogenously diffuses the light produced by the interior LED module in a variety of colors and brightness levels depending on the activation of the 24-volt RGB matrix. This transforms the handle into a visible status indicator even from the side or from a distance – ideal for large systems operating with small crews. Depending on how it is wired, the light signal can indicate problems in the process, signal regular operation, or show that the system is ready to be opened. The colors and functions can be allocated individually. The extensive documentation and the video tutorial on the JW Winco website offer several possibilities. JW Winco has taken a holistic approach and provided the illuminated cabinet U-handle with a passive counterpart. The EN 6284.1 has the same shape and material (glass fiber- reinforced polyamide) as its active sibling, allowing for consistent machine design. Speaking of design: This combination of multifunctionality, design, ergonomics, and versatility was awarded the prestigious iF Design Award 2023.

Continuing to expand its offerings of LED indicators for industrial, medical, and other controls and retrofit panel mount applications, LEDtronics® introduces new additions to its family of bolt-on, non-relampable and front-mounting panel indicators with screw terminals, featuring various color options and lens types. The new series of direct incandescent-replacement LED lights for mounting in holes of Ø0.681 inch (Ø17.3mm) diameter is an excellent choice for machine tool applications as well as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning control panels; medical equipment and signal and pilot lights, among many others. They feature slotted 0.05-inch tab terminals for panels no thicker than 0.180 inch (4.57mm) and a choice of cylindrical top hat or dome lens types. Offering energy savings with a much lower power consumption of only 0.5 watts or less, these indicator lamps provide sunlight-visible LED light in super yellow, super red or aqua-green colors, with a viewing angle of 10 to 80 degrees for the dome lens units, and 20 and 80 degrees for the flat, top-hat lens units, depending on lens color. They are rated for 28VDC input voltage, with the dome lens units providing illumination of 1 to 2.3 lumens and a luminous intensity ranging from 1.3 to 2.4 maximum candela, while the cylindrical flat-lens units offer 34 and 76 lumens and a luminous intensity of 44 and 93 maximum candelas. The series operates on an input current ranging between 0.08 to 0.017 amps. The PTx780-028B/WP Series comes in a nickel-coated brass housing, a slotted 0.05-inch, brass-coated terminal, a nylon base, and a polycarbonate lens. An integrated series resistor prevents short-circuiting, eliminating the necessity of special fuses. They mount to the front of a panel, accommodating panels up to 0.3 inch (7.62mm) in thickness. They are also lightweight — weighing only 1.0 ounce (28.35 grams). These durable LED lamps provide years of reliable performance with sustained color fidelity and energy efficiency, with an IP65 protection rating — they are water-tight and splash-proof for outdoor locations, operating in a wide temperature range of -30°C to +80°C (-22°F to 176°F). The new LEDtronics series PTD780-0xx-028B/WP (dome lens) and PTF780-0xx-028B/WP (cylindrical top-hat lens) panel front mounting, bolt-on indicator LED lamps come with an unconditional 3-year U.S. factory warranty, and are available through LEDtronics distributors. Other options, such as standard voltages, other LED colors, bulb styles or tabs are available for qualified volume orders.

H2 Clipper, Inc. (“H2C”), an aerospace and alternative energy company developing uniquely capable hydrogen-powered dirigibles, has announced that it was granted a new U.S. patent for its warehouse-in-the-sky that includes the integration of aerial drones for picking up, transporting, and delivering packaged goods and other payloads. The technology incorporates: the use of a beacon, which can be a dedicated device or one’s cell phone, that enables package delivery by drone for companies like Amazon/FedEx/UPS/DHL etc., particularly in remote locations. Uniquely, the beacon also permits package returns from rural areas and remote global villages to put those items into international commerce; the ability to launch drones from a dirigible, allowing the drones to use all on-board energy to lift heavier packages rather than using that same energy to fly to the drop-off or pickup zone, resulting in efficient use of every route; charging bays for the aerial drones to recharge between short flights, which further reduces package delivery and retrieval time and trips; an on-board camera with each drone which provides proof of delivery, and is particularly important when using drone delivery in rural areas. With this patented technology, H2C’s warehouse-in-the-sky is the only airship technology that allows for pinpoint pick-up and delivery accuracy for commercial, consumer, and humanitarian use. “With the continued increase in online purchasing, the speed, convenience, and cost of local delivery are essential considerations for the supply chain,” said H2C Founder and CEO Rinaldo S. Brutoco. “By utilizing airships for delivery, shipments can bypass the exceedingly crowded and inefficient port facilities and airports, and eliminate the need for multiple intermodal transfers, handling steps, and ground-based facilities—minimizing delays and reducing costs.” US Patent 11,820,482 B2, entitled “Method and Apparatus for Lighter-Than-Air Airship with Improved Structure and Delivery System,” was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and focuses on enhancements over previous airship designs and operating modes. Methods such as those described in H2C’s latest patent are focused on improving the “last mile” of delivery. The enhanced aerodynamic characteristics of the improved airship will enable it to travel at significant speeds, making door-to-door overnight delivery from a few regional warehouses and second-day door-to-door delivery of goods a possibility across the world. This ability to rapidly serve end-users directly from the factory or a few large regional distribution centers will resolve the last-mile challenges and provide a strong competitive advantage. The improvements represent a continuation of the work that H2C began in 2008 when it filed for its initial patent, which was issued in 2012. This news follows H2C’s January 2024 announcement that it was awarded a foundational robotics patent for using advanced “swarm robotics,” which achieves radical reductions of cost and quantum advances in manufacturing techniques for a wide variety of applications—including large scale lighter than air airships. H2C is represented in intellectual property matters by John C. Serio, a Partner in the Boston Intellectual Property and Technology Group at Withers Worldwide.

The company’s flagship system is lauded by small municipalities and medium-sized cities that rely on the use of physical keys to secure their property and assets Morse Watchmans, a key control and asset management system, reports a rising number of international cities and municipalities installing the company’s flagship key control system, KeyWatcher® Touch, to secure the buildings, equipment, and vehicles utilized by various municipal departments. “From public works to waste departments, courthouses, and beyond, the adoption of our KeyWatcher Touch solution continues to resonate positively across so many diverse cities,” said Tim Purpura, VP of Global Sales and Marketing, Morse Watchmans. “We take pride in knowing that our systems are being used to facilitate secure and efficient operations for some of the public’s most critical services.” By implementing effective municipal key control measures, cities can mitigate the risks associated with unauthorized key access while maintaining the operational integrity of public works. This proactive approach not only safeguards against potential security breaches but also fosters accountability and responsible use of resources among city employees. In this way, cities and municipalities can establish a foundation of trust and confidence within their communities. In one instance, the Walworth County Public Works Department in Wisconsin implemented a new KeyWatcher Touch system after the original key box system failed to adequately support the county’s hundreds of keys for government buildings and county fleet vehicles. After seeing the success of the KeyWatcher Touch solution at the Department of Public Works, other departments within Walworth County have also begun installing their own KeyWatcher Systems. “These boxes are starting to catch on, and departments are thinking about how they will use them for vehicles and building keys,” said John Miller, Senior Project Manager, Walworth County Public Works. Across the globe, the operational efficiencies of the KeyWatcher Touch solution are also appreciated. Blacktown City, a suburban community located approximately 22 miles west of Sydney, Australia, implemented a KeyWatcher Touch system at their Main Works Depot to help maintain usage accountability and eliminate the problem of missing or overdue vehicles, machinery, and building keys. “We manage keys for at least 500 vehicles and machines here at the Depot and each of them has at least two to three sets of keys,” said Joe Haddad, Facility Manager, Blacktown City Main Works Depot. “Without the KeyWatcher Touch automated control and tracking, the job of accurately keeping track of these many keys would be almost impossible.”
