PTDA honors Bill Childers with Warren Pike Award
The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has named Bill Childers the 29th recipient of its Warren Pike Award for lifetime achievement in the power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) industry. Bill received the award, named for PTDA’s co-founder and first president, during the PTDA Virtual Industry Summit. The award was established in 1984 to honor individuals who have demonstrated outstanding, continuous, long-term support of PTDA and the PT/MC industry and is only presented when an individual’s achievements merit this prestigious recognition. Warren Pike Award recipients are selected by the PTDA Board of Directors. Bill spent the first 25 years of his career as vice president of sales for Emerson Power Transmission. He then moved on to other roles including president of NSK Canada in 2002 and president of North American sales for Rexnord in 2008. In 2015, Bill joined Affiliated Distributors where he served as vice president and managing director, overseeing the launch of AD’s power transmission division. During his career, Bill also devoted his time volunteering for various PTDA committees including serving as Manufacturer Council Chair in 2006 and PTDA Foundation president in 2010. He also served on the PTDA Board of Directors in 2013. Bill thanked the Board for the award and members who helped him throughout his career. Bill commented, “Getting involved with PTDA was probably the best decision I made in my 47 years in the PT business. It’s all about relationships. You can firm those up while interacting at PTDA events and that translates to your business relationships.”
PTDA’s Industry reports indicate recovery in 2021
The second quarter 2020 Sales History & Outlook Report (SHOR) released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) continues to indicate the PTDA Distributors and Manufacturer SHOR Index annual averages will decline into early 2021 with subsequent rising trends lasting through at least year-end 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has damaged the U.S. and global industrial sectors, bringing challenging conditions in terms of both supply and demand. However, rising leading indicators and government stimulus bode well for the recovery trend. ITR Economics anticipates that the power transmission industry will be nearly completely recovered from the pandemic’s impact by the end of 2022. The PTDA Business Index for distributors declined in the second quarter of 2020 to 31.3 while the Manufacturer Business Index declined to 25.3. The steep declining trend in the total PTDA Business Index, combined with prior declining trends in US and Canadian leading indicators, suggests business cycle decline is ahead for PTDA members during the coming quarters. However, current trends in the U.S. and Canadian leading indicators suggest recovery will take hold in the industrial sector during 2021. PTDA members participating in SHOR receive the results and forecasts through 2022 at no charge after the close of the calendar quarter. For more specifics on the forecast for power transmission/motion control sales through distribution as well as forecasts for manufacturer sales, purchase the 2Q2020 SHOR at ptda.org/SHOR. The PTDA Business Index is modeled after the widely respected PMI and tracks the change in business activity, new orders, employment, supplier deliveries, inventories, prices, and backlog in the PT/MC industry to arrive at an overall index. The entire 2Q2020 PTDA Business Index report is available through PTDA’s website at ptda.org/Index. The Power Transmission Distributors Association is the leading global association for the industrial power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) distribution channel. Headquartered in Chicago, PTDA represents power transmission/motion control distribution firms that generate more than $16 billion in sales and span over 2,700 locations. PTDA members also include manufacturers that supply the PT/MC industry. PTDA is dedicated to providing exceptional networking, targeted education, relevant information, and leading-edge business tools to help distributors and manufacturers meet marketplace demands competitively and profitably. PTDA’s Industry reports show Power Transmission Industry to decline into early next year
The first quarter 2020 Sales History & Outlook Report (SHOR) released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) indicates the COVID-19 outbreak and oil supply-demand imbalance have resulted in an unprecedentedly steep drop-off in sales across many sectors of the economy. The PTDA Distributors SHOR Index and Manufacturers SHOR Index will likely reach cyclical lows in early 2021 with a subsequent rise that will last through at least 2022; however, the Indices are not expected to return to the 2019 level during that time. The PTDA Business Index (a broader overall business metric than the SHOR)—for distributors rose in the first quarter of 2020, reaching 56.1 as did the manufacturer index, up to 41.7, but still indicated manufacturer activity is in decline. Upward momentum in both the PTDA manufacturer and distributor Business Indices will likely be short-lived, as the impact of the COVID-19 and oil price black swans will likely be more acute in the second quarter of the year. PTDA members participating in SHOR receive the results and forecasts through 2022 at no charge after the close of the calendar quarter. For more specifics on the forecast for power transmission/motion control sales through distribution as well as forecasts for manufacturer sales, purchase the 1Q2020 SHOR at ptda.org/SHOR. Kaman Distribution Group appoints industry veteran for CEO
Kaman Distribution Group or KDG, a value-added distributor of bearings and power transmission, automation, and fluid power products, has announced that Benjamin Mondics has been appointed Chief Executive Officer. Littlejohn & Company acquired KDG earlier this year. Mr. Mondics is a seasoned executive with a thirty-five-year track record of success in the industrial distribution industry. He most recently served as President & CEO of ERIKS North America, a global distributor of gasket, hose, sealing, flow control, power transmission, industrial plastics, and maintenance products. Prior to ERIKS, Ben served as President of Kaydon Corporation, a subsidiary of SKF Group. Ben also spent nearly twenty years with Applied Industrial Technologies (“AIT”), a distributor of bearings, power transmission products, hydraulic and pneumatic components, industrial rubber products, and general maintenance supplies. While at AIT, Ben served in a variety of successive leadership positions, including most recently as President and Chief Operating Officer. “Kaman Distribution Group is a leading industrial distribution platform, and I am excited to serve as its CEO,” said Mr. Mondics. “I was attracted to KDG’s national footprint, excellent reputation in the market, full product offering and service capabilities, longstanding customer and supplier relationships, and talented workforce of over 2,000 associates. With Littlejohn’s support, I am eager to accelerate KDG’s growth, both organically and via acquisition, and execute on a variety of operational improvement opportunities available to the Company.” Tony Miranda, Managing Director of Littlejohn and a member of KDG’s board of directors, said, “We are thrilled to have an executive of Ben’s caliber join KDG. Ben’s decades of experience across a variety of industrial distribution and manufacturing platforms is a wonderful asset, and will enable him to have an immediate and measurable impact on the business.” As part of the transition, Al Lariviere will be stepping down as KDG’s CEO. Mr. Miranda added, “On behalf of the entire KDG organization, I would like to thank Al for his contributions to the Company and the instrumental role he played in leading the separation of KDG from Kaman Corporation. During Al’s tenure, several strategic initiatives were initiated and implemented which has positioned KDG for future success. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
