Plastics Industry Association releases Economic Analysis on Plastics Materials for Recycling

Dr. Perc Pineda headshot

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has released an analysis on plastics materials for recycling, authored by PLASTICS Chief Economist Dr. Perc Pineda. The economic analysis provides consideration of the millions of workers employed in the global supply chain of the plastics industry, as representatives meet in France to address the global challenge of plastic waste. Dr. Pineda writes, “There is widespread support from various sectors of the global economy to address environmental threats in a materials-neutral manner. It is also advocated that any negotiated measures concerning plastics should not be utilized to hinder market access for plastic materials and products. The goal should be to ensure that efforts to keep plastic waste out of the environment and in the economy do not unfairly impede the trade of plastic materials and products, allowing equal opportunities for all participants in the global market.” Click here to read the full analysis on the PLASTICS blog page.

Exhibitors will also be offered end-of-show recycling and donation opportunities for materials they don’t want to ship back home to reduce our carbon footprint,” Donaldson added.

Plastics Industry Association statement on Oregon’s Single-Use Plastic Law

Plastics logo

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has released the following statement on Oregon’s new single-use plastics law, which bans restaurants and other food vendors from using expanded polystyrene food containers: “Oregon’s new single-use plastics law is unnecessary given the state’s recently enacted extended producer responsibility (EPR) law,” said Matt Seaholm, PLASTICS President and CEO. “Rather than give the people of Oregon the chance to responsibly recycle materials, this law forces the costly replacement of recyclable containers with alternative materials that could create an even larger carbon footprint. The plastics industry wants to keep plastic out of the environment and in the economy; we are committed to eliminating waste, but a ban like this is potentially worse for the environment and increases costs for business owners and consumers.”

Brother Mobile Solutions provides a range of solutions to help optimize warehouse operations, including barcode printing software, labels, and mobile devices. Be sure to tune in to discover how important mobility is in the warehouse environment and learn about the future of modernization in this industry. How Brother Mobile Solutions Helps Challenges Faced By Warehouses Today Warehouses face the challenge of transitioning from traditional, paper-based methods and outdated software to modern, digital solutions. Nick shares that many businesses still use manual processes such as Excel spreadsheets and Sharpies to manage their warehouses. These outdated processes make it difficult to track inventory efficiently and accurately. Nick adds that Brother can help in this transition by providing tools to democratize technology. Barcoding is the most basic digital representation of physical items, enabling them to be tracked and traced more easily. Brother can also provide mobile printing solutions that allow faster workflows so staff can independently complete tasks such as labeling, packing, and picking. In addition, Brother can assist businesses in moving warehouse management into the cloud for added efficiency. Brother Mobile Solutions Products Brother Mobile Solutions has a range of products designed specifically for warehouse environments. One of the essential products is the mobile four-inch printer, which can be mounted on forklifts to enable workers to print four-by-six, four-by-two, or four-by-eight labels. Brother also has full-page mobile 8.5” x 11” capabilities for packing and picking lists and labels. No more walking back to a stationary printer! In their Tennessee warehouse, Brother has implemented mobile printing with cobots and following robots, with mobile printers bolted to enable labels to print out as workers complete their tasks. This feature allows the workflow to move along swiftly with the worker at the point. For more significant industrial printing needs, Brother has high-velocity barcode label printers that handle many labels. These products are extensively tested for ruggedness and durability, with Brother’s experience in designing products for use in trucks and other challenging environments coming into play. Brother’s motor division provides automation to the underbellies of the robots in their warehouse, highlighting the full range of solutions that Brother can provide for warehouse management. Flexible Connectivity Options from Brother Mobile Solutions Brother Mobile Solutions understands that warehouse workflows can vary greatly, depending on whether work occurs at the dock or outside the four walls. As such, connectivity options are a crucial factor to consider when implementing warehouse management technology. Brother offers the flexibility of Bluetooth connectivity to enable users to print labels in environments where WiFi may not be possible. When work occurs inside the four walls, dual radio models are available to connect securely to an enterprise-level network. This connectivity ensures that workers can print labels securely and that the system will be reliable and responsive. They also support Android and iOS operating systems and comply with iOS MFI standards. With flexible connectivity options, Brother has ensured its products can adapt to various warehouse workflows. Brother Mobile Solutions has also ensured that their radios perform well, even when users need to roam from one access point to another. This performance is critical from both the implementation standpoint and for users who need to press print and know that their label will come out quickly and accurately. Key Takeaways Hundred million-dollar businesses still use Excel spreadsheets and Sharpies to manage their warehouse. Nick believes providing a system that’s easy to maintain is one way to help make the employees happy and the workers more efficient. Brother offers a demo option to interested parties, allowing them to try their printers before committing to a purchase. Their team is happy to send out printers to get a demo or pilot test going. Key Takeaways Solomon shares that retailers are looking for a balanced approach to delivery services that offer both a competitive price and reliable customer service. This includes providing faster delivery times, better tracking information, and a higher level of customer service than the post office. Companies are also beginning to realize that they need to create flexible pricing models that reflect their customers’ needs to stay competitive. Solomon explains how retailers utilize a blend of national shipping companies, postal delivery, and alternate delivery companies for the best coverage. ShipX acquired a middle-mile trucking and transportation company for better control over the truck part of delivery. This acquisition allows them to separate from other final mile solutions due to greater coverage (70% of US) and seamless processing. As the delivery services industry evolves, companies must pay close attention to the changing landscape. Solomon believes staying ahead of the competition means finding the right mix of traditional regional carriers and more modern players. Procurement managers should aim for a diversified selection of delivery services that accommodate national or postal solutions and larger packages that cannot ship via LTL. Lansmont Corporation, part of the Physical Properties Testers (PPT) Group, is extending its investment in packaging durability testing and research by donating some of its test and measurement technologies to the Michigan State University (MSU) School of Packaging. Lansmont holds strong historical ties with the university, as the company was established in 1971 – in part – by a number of MSU School of Packaging alumni. Today Lansmont is world-renowned for its shock and vibration measurement and testing technology, counting leading companies, government laboratories, and educational institutions among its customers. “The School of Packaging is pleased to extend our partnership with Lansmont through this generous gift,” said Matthew Daum, Ph.D., MSU School of Packaging director and assistant dean of corporate relations and strategy for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR). “New and updated equipment ensures our students have the best hands-on learning experiences with industry-leading equipment. MSU has a long history of distribution packaging thought leadership, and this gift helps ensure we maintain a strong program.” With damage prevention at the core of Lansmont’s ethos, the in-kind equipment donations will include a TruMotion Acceleration Sled system, an updated data acquisition system, vibration table controller and software, a shock table, and controller, as well as next-generation SAVER units. The SAVER environmental data recorders help companies measure what shock, impact, and vibration levels a product or package is exposed to in the supply chain. That data then allows for the assessment and characterization of both the dynamic and atmospheric hazards present within transportation and in-use environments. Being part of the PPT Group has enabled Lansmont to further extend its donation by including other group testers such as Mecmesin’s bench-top compression and tensile testing equipment, as well as Alluris torque testing equipment. This provides students with an all-around testing solution that is rather unique in the area of physical properties testing solutions. “MSU’s School of Packaging is a vital building block in the world of packaging testing,” says John Page, PPT Group Managing Director. “For us to facilitate the learning and research that takes place at this institution is both a privilege and a sure investment in the study of packaging dynamics.” The PPT Group is a family of brands, which includes Lansmont, who are experts in the design and production of physical properties testing solutions for quality control. Lansmont’s ties to East Lansing Lansmont’s support of packaging research and the development of future packaging professionals is clearly not the company’s only tie to MSU. Around 1968 under the guidance of MSU School of Packaging Director James Goff, Ph.D., the school partnered with Monterey Research Labs (MRL) in Monterey, California, to test real-world products using what was called the Fragility Assessment Theory and Test Procedure — originally developed Bob Newton, Ph.D., of the Naval Post Graduate School. This procedure allowed for an engineering approach for defining a product’s fragility, or ruggedness. Establishing those product durability characteristics would allow Packaging designers to subsequently establish protective packaging performance requirements – all quantifiable metrics. Using an IMPAC shock machine on consignment from MRL, a number of MSU graduate students, including Ed Church, Ken Horiszny, and Dennis Young, performed extensive shock testing of different products to help validate Dr. Newton’s theory. Ultimately, their positive results led to the establishment of the Lansmont Corporation and the proliferation of shock test systems throughout the world. The company was named LANSMONT, combining LANSing and MONTerey. “This gift is a prime example of MSU School of Packaging alumni giving back, helping out tomorrow’s packaging professionals, and investing in the future of the packaging industry,” Daum said. “We are truly amazed and grateful for the continued support and far-reaching network of our MSU packaging family.”

Metal Fabricator eliminates pallet wrapping bottleneck with automated Orbital Wrapper

TAB-Wrapper-Penn-Sheet-Metal image

TAB Wrapper Tornado allows Penn sheet metal to wrap long pallet loads fast Metal fabrication company Penn Sheet Metal, Allentown, Pennsylvania, has cut the time required to stretch-wrap its pallet loads of architectural and roofing components and custom decorative building products from an average of 15 minutes per load to 60 seconds or less by replacing manual stretch-wrapping with the automated TAB Wrapper Tornado orbital wrapping machine. Releasing a bottleneck in the packaging department that threatened the company’s stellar lead times, the TAB Wrapper Tornado automatically wraps stretch wrap 360 degrees around and under the pallet and load while it is raised on a forklift to create a secure, unitized load without banding or boxes. The orbital wrapper safely encases the full length of the fabricator’s custom 10- and 16-foot-long pallets required for many of the elongated metal parts. Speeding production while reducing the number of workers involved in the wrapping process from two or three to just one worker, the orbital wrapper saves an average of 2-1/2 hours per day or more than 78 full, eight-hour workdays per year, according to Mike Roeder, president of Penn Sheet Metal. “We were wasting so much time wrapping pallets by hand until I’d finally had enough,” says Roeder. “Now we’re getting a much better, more secure wrap every time, even on our longest skids and it wouldn’t even be possible to wrap them by hand – I just love this machine!” The orbital wrapping machine is designed and manufactured by TAB Industries, Reading, Pennsylvania. TAB offers a range of automated and semi-automated orbital wrappers in several sizes to suit nearly any pallet wrapping requirements.

Retail sales off to a good start in 2023?

Plastics logo

If you have read the latest PLASTICS Size and Impact report, chances are you’ve learned that 89% of plastic products ended up in the personal consumption column. Given that two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) is personal consumption expenditures, strong consumer spending data are greeted with optimism in the plastics industry. According to the advanced retail sales estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau for January of 2023, U.S. retail sales rose by 3.0% from December and 6.4% from a year earlier.  Retail sales in all business categories, except for gasoline stations which had zero growth, increased in January. Department store sales increased the most by 17.5% followed by food services and drinking locales which rose by 7.2%.  The strong increased sales in these business categories including motor vehicle and parts dealers, furniture stores, and electronics and appliances stores, could increase plastics shipments as inventories are replenished. This, however, hinges on the retailer’s inventories-to-sales ratio. The retailers’ amount of inventory relative to the number of sales was 1.26 in December, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While this ratio has been increasing throughout 2022, prior to the COVID-19 recession it stayed above 1.40. Some factors to consider Monthly data tend to be noisy or have high variability—not an indication of a trend. U.S. retail sales estimates are reported in nominal terms or without adjusting for inflation. The Consumer Price Index was up 0.5% in January. Headline inflation was 6.4% in January – negligibly lower from 6.5% in December. In real terms, or adjusted for inflation, the retail sales growth in January is lower than the nominal estimates. One possible implication of robust consumer spending during an inflationary environment is higher consumer debt. Consumer loans consisting of credit cards and other revolving credit at all commercial banks rose $14.7 billion in January from December. It was a 16.8% increase from a year earlier. Debt-driven growth has limits and could be problematic during an economic slowdown. A weaker labor market, although not a current issue but likely during a low-growth economic environment, could generate higher unemployment rates and negatively affect household personal income. Cautiously optimistic If the economy continues to stay strong, and consumers remain engaged, plastic product shipments could increase as plastics and plastic products are part of household consumption. However, with the U.S. economic outlook continuing to evolve, a single data point does not reflect an underlying growth momentum in the economy. The U.S. economy is adjusting from a robust 5.9% post-COVID-19 growth rate in 2021 to long-run sustainable growth. The likelihood that the U.S. will grow below 2022’s 2.1% GDP growth remains. The First Quarter 2023 Survey of Professional Forecasters of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia shares this view.
