Epax Systems, a supplier and installer of waste compaction systems, including stationary compactors, rolling compactors, vertical balers, and horizontal balers, has expanded its product offerings to include the complete line of Sanitech auger-style refuse and recycling compactors. “The addition of the Sanitech line of auger compactors allows us to better serve the needs of customers with high-volume compaction requirements,” said Epax president Stefan Nielsen. Sanitech Auger Compactors are more efficient than hydraulic ram-style units. As the auger spins, waste is efficiently broken down, creating higher bulk density in the container and storing as much as 50% more waste. This high degree of compaction significantly reduces haul frequency and expense. The auger is up to five 5-times faster than a ram system, so productivity is improved as workers spend less time feeding waste. An all-electric direct-drive system uses no hydraulics; there is no potential for adverse environmental impact from a hydraulic leak. Sanitech Auger Compactors are available in stationary and self-contained configurations. “Partnering with Epax Systems not only helps our sales efforts, but because of their intimate knowledge of compaction equipment also significantly bolsters our service and installation capabilities nationwide,” said SANITECH president Ron Kaptein.

Although winter weather evokes images of warm fires, icy wonderlands, and snowball fights, it can also be highly destructive to roofs. Ice accumulation on the edge of roofs, also known as ice dams, can create a blizzard of problems for property owners, from minor inconveniences to severe structural damages. If left untreated, water from melting ice migrates and accumulates, which can cause leaks, mold growth, structural damage, and, in extreme cases, total roof collapse. The melted water then refreezes as temperatures drop, restarting the cycle again. EasyHeat, an Emerson brand, is helping building owners avoid costly problems with its RG Trace Cable De-Icing System. Simple and inexpensive, the RG Trace Cable De-Icing System includes everything necessary for a complete, hassle-free installation: Cut-to-length RG Trace heating cables, delivering 12 watts per foot output needed to accommodate larger commercial gutters and downspouts; EasyHeat Controls to sense both moisture and temperature, optimizing power consumption; Downspout hangers, power connection kits, and end-seals are necessary to complete the system safely. Being self-regulating, EasyHeat RG Trace Cables automatically varies its heat output as temperature changes. The cable’s outer jacket is both waterproof and UV resistant to withstand harsh weather conditions for years, while a tinned copper braid installed over two protective inner jackets provides a continuous ground path. EasyHeat RG Trace Cable De-Icing System is available on reels up to 1,000 feet for cut-to-length convenience in the field. It is suitable for use on asphalt or wood shingles, metal roofing, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic, modified bitumen (“membrane”), and virtually every other type of roofing material. AVOID REPAIR COSTS Repairing a roof is expensive. Even a minor repair typically costs several thousand dollars. Larger repairs or work on membrane, slate, or metal roofs run exponentially higher. Industry estimates put roof replacement on a 10,000-square-foot commercial building at approximately $70,000. By safeguarding the roof line, gutter, and downspouts of buildings from damaging ice and snow accumulation, the EasyHeat RG Trace Cable De-Icing System is an investment that pays dividends every winter, year after year. ICICLE DANGERS As if ice dams aren’t enough to deal with in the winter, another danger often hangs over our heads: large icicles can fall from multi-story buildings, causing lacerations, broken bones, head trauma, or worse. Icicles have also been known to shatter the windows of cars parked nearby when they’ve broken free. Icicles are visual evidence of ice dam formation and are the primary cause of leaky and overloaded roofs. EasyHeat RG Trace Cable Systems prevent icicles from forming, providing protection to property and people. EasyHeat RG Trace Cables are UL and CSA-approved for roof application to existing structures and new construction.

Market challenges post-Covid – including rising living costs, project delays and bottlenecks – will need to be overcome in order for the sector to flourish. Opportunities for the automated Micro-Fulfillment Center (MFC) market are growing substantially over time due to the rising demand for shorter delivery times. Providing vendors address the barriers to adoption, the MFC market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 65% from 2023 to 2030, reaching over $3.5 billion annually by 2030. According to the latest report from Interact Analysis, the market for automated micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) has witnessed a series of challenges to adoption. However, the market opportunity remains high. To reach widespread adoption, several barriers need to be overcome. Assuming these barriers are overcome, Interact Analysis expects the market could grow to an annual revenue of $3.5 billion by 2030. Nascent stages of growth Despite initially high expectations, deploying automated MFCs has faced several challenges that fit into two categories: productivity inhibitors and hidden costs. Productivity inhibitors include integrating manually picked items, with those selected by automation proving inefficient, reducing overall system throughput. Advancements in manual in-store fulfillment software have also narrowed the ROI gap, diminishing the appeal of automated solutions. Additionally, macroeconomic factors, such as rising living costs, have also encouraged consumers to favor in-store shopping over delivery services, further dampening demand. Furthermore, hidden costs like construction delays and process refinements – along with productivity inhibitors like bottlenecks in the consolidation of manually picked items and MFC replenishment – have also negatively impacted ROI, making the adoption of automated MFCs less attractive. These barriers to adoption must first be addressed. If they aren’t, the number of MFC deployments will be lower than expected. Addressing the barriers to adoption As part of the research process, Interact Analysis identified several key strategies MFC vendors should adopt to address the previously mentioned barriers to adoption. These include sophisticated fulfillment software, flexible and scalable automation solutions, effective pricing models, and many others. To address the barriers to adoption discussed above, vendors must be able to provide expansive fulfillment software. Online grocery fulfillment is complex and involves the processing of orders, quickly. Automated MFC’s offer the capability to integrate hardware, software, and human labor to solve these logistical challenges efficiently. Flexibility and scalability are also key. Automation solution providers must be able to provide solutions that cater to different facility sizes while ensuring that they enhance the ROI for retailers. The level of complexity of the solutions must also be considered. Retailers want to be able to install the solution without the need to spend time and money training workers. Many automation providers have successfully done this by having user-friendly interfaces installed on the technology. What does the future hold for MFCs? Overall, the market for Automated Micro-Fulfillment Centers (MFCs) is projected to experience significant growth, with a forecast compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 65% from 2023 to 2030, reaching a market size exceeding $3.5 billion annually by 2030. In 2024 alone, Interact Analysis predicts that grocers will spend $18.5 billion on store labor for online order picking. By comparison, the total warehousing sector will spend ~$180 billion on labor, meaning that grocery in-store fulfillment labor cost equates to 10% of the total warehouse labor costs. The market is witnessing a bifurcation, with smaller sites for convenience orders and larger sites for weekly shop orders. As a result, technologies such as mobile AS/RS, shuttle AS/RS, and ultra-high-density storage systems are expected to play a significant role in fulfilling weekly shop orders, while nanofulfillment solutions are primarily going to be used in the fulfillment of convenience orders. Labor is generally still being used for manual in-store picking but the total addressable market for MFCs through localized fulfillment is increasing. Overall, the e-commerce market value for localized fulfillment is expected to increase from $1.9bn in 2023 to $4.4bn in 2030. This is mainly driven by the grocery segment but also other verticals such as healthcare and general merchandise due to the demand for shorter delivery times. Rowan Stott, Research Analyst at Interact Analysis, comments: “The market is in its early stages of growth, with several barriers to adoption in the MFC industry that haven’t been addressed yet by vendors. We believe that addressing these will be the most important factor in determining future growth. “Overall, the automated MFC market is poised for substantial growth, driven by the increasing demand for localized fulfillment and advancements in automation technologies. As major retailers continue to invest in these solutions, the market is set to rapidly expand, offering significant opportunities for vendors and stakeholders in the industry.” About the report Over the years, we’ve developed and refined our view of what micro-fulfillment is and how to define it. We’ve come to the conclusion that micro-fulfillment is less about the size of the facility, but rather more about the radius of delivery. As such, the scope of this report is constrained by delivery radius, rather than facility size. In addition to providing a wealth of granular market data, this report will also explore what the biggest barriers limiting the uptake of micro-fulfillment centers, along with the key attributes that retailers are looking for when selecting an automation partner.

Their modular design incorporates Plug-and-Play technology for easy installation and enables all components of the drive to be individually serviced, minimizing maintenance, downtime, and repair costs. Sorters, belt conveyors, curved conveyors, and lifters employ two-stage NORDBLOC.1 helical bevel gear units paired with IE4 or IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors and NORDAC LINK variable frequency drives, while merger applications use UNICASE helical inline gear units to accommodate their particularly high dynamics and speeds. Both compact solutions provide high-efficiency, fast ramp times, smooth automation, long service life, and quiet operation. Baggage handling systems often incorporate hundreds of gear motors that work together to efficiently move baggage from one end of the airport to the other. They must be precise, reliable, and customizable with sophisticated electronic controls to ensure the highest level of performance and energy efficiency. With high quality drive systems that combine gear motors with integrated distributed controls, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS provides both a reliable and cost-effective solution that meets the special requirements of the industry. These solutions typically consist of UNICASE helical bevel gear units or two-stage NORDBLOC.1 helical bevel gear units paired with high efficiency IE3 or IE5+ motors and NORDAC FLEX variable frequency drives. The decentralized modular design is beneficial for maintenance while M12 quick disconnect receptables simplify the installation process and cut down on complicated wiring systems. Each NORD motor frame size has several available brake sizes, a multitude of options, and integrated dynamic brake control for rapid starting and stopping of the conveyors as baggage travels through the system. Additionally, their brake motors with distributed control AC drives have the brake rectifier integrated directly into the drive, eliminating the need for standard brake rectifiers and associated brake control relay circuits. When it comes to the packaging industry, continuous running of automation systems is a high priority. All technology and drives must be well-balanced and have a high level of stability to meet production goals. For bottling plants that require multiple systems for preparation, filling, and packaging, NORD offers UNICASE worm gear units, UNIVERSAL SI worm gear units, and UNIVERSAL SMI worm gear units paired with NORDAC PRO SK 500P variable frequency drives. These centralized VFDs enable precise adjustment of speeds to avoid faults from bottles falling over during conveyance. They also deliver the high speeds and precision control required during the sealing process. An integrated multi-protocol Ethernet interface allows for remote maintenance tools, control, and online inspection of the entire system to check for faults and evaluate data from all drives in the plant. The food and beverage industry has a wide range of machines that perform specific automated tasks such as food separators, belt coating systems, and pipes that pump liquid pastes into mixers. NORD delivers robust drive technology for these specialized systems and adheres to strict hygiene standards with options including food-grade lubrication, stainless steel shafts, IP69K-rated washdown protection, and more. Their UNICASE helical bevel gear motors deliver efficient, reliable automation for separators and belt systems with durable, wear-free gear teeth, high axial and radial load capacities, and low maintenance for reduced downtime. NORDBLOC.1 helical inline gear units are an ideal solution when it comes to pump applications thanks to their large bearings that provide exceptional strength, durability, and minimal wear from radial and axial forces. For food and beverage applications that require electronic controls, NORD offers NORDAC ON/ON+ variable frequency drives with integrated multi-protocol Ethernet interface for easy integration into modern automation systems. Their housings are made from robust aluminum alloy with an IP protection class up to IP66, making it suitable for harsh environmental conditions. These drives can additionally be operated in temperature ranges from -22°F (-30°C) to +104°F (+40°C), making them ideal for both deep-freeze and high-heat applications. With their widespread industry knowledge, application expertise, and global sales and technical support, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS delivers complete drive solutions from a single source configured to meet the most specialized of automation system needs.

A U.S. Department of Labor workplace safety investigation has found a Woodbury plastic and resin manufacturer could have prevented a 37-year-old employee from suffering fatal injuries by following required safety rules designed to keep machines from starting up during maintenance. Investigators with the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration learned the maintenance technician at Crown USA Inc. was crushed inside an unlocked hooding palletizer while servicing the machine. “Employers must understand federal workplace safety regulations exist to help prevent tragedies like the one that occurred at Crown USA Inc.,” said OSHA Area Director Jeffery Stawowy in Atlanta-West. “OSHA is available to answer employers’ questions and to help them understand their obligations. We can also provide employers resources for identifying hazards in their workplaces and developing safety programs.” OSHA determined the company violated federal regulations by: Failing to use adequate machine guarding to protect employees from struck-by and crushed-by hazards. Failing to train employees on energy control procedures and maintain training records. Failing to conduct inspections of energy control procedures. Exposing workers to serious respiratory hazards by not protecting them from accumulations of airborne particles of powdered pigment and other types of dust throughout the facility. Not providing personal protective equipment that prevents eye and skin irritation. Failing to label containers properly according to hazardous communication standards. Crown USA received eight serious and six other-than-serious violations. The company faces $98,699 in proposed OSHA penalties. The agency provides information on lockout/tagout and other machine safety procedures to educate employers on how to protect workers from potential equipment hazards. Founded in 1994, Crown USA Inc. supplies and manufactures roadway paint and pavement marking materials at its headquarters in Columbus. The company has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission

Pettibone Traverse/Lift, LLC is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Cary-Lift, which became the world’s first forward-reaching, rough-terrain material handler upon its invention by Phil LaTendresse in 1949. Shortly after its origin, the Cary-Lift product line was acquired by Pettibone, and it remains an industry-leading solution for pipe, pole and log handling to this day. The inventor’s grandson, also named Phil LaTendresse, is currently Pettibone’s director of engineering and product support. “A local sawmill owner was looking for a better solution for unloading logs, and that’s when my grandfather came up with the concept of being able to reach forward with a forklift, which inspired the first prototype Cary-Lift,” said LaTendresse. “He built about 13 machines before selling the business to Pettibone Mulliken Corporation.” The Pettibone Cary-Lift provides distinct design advantages over wheel loaders and other tools often used to move pipe, poles or similar materials, making the machine a popular choice for worksites all around the world. The unique Cary-Lift overhead lift arm design gives the operator full front visibility, and its solid steel body frame allows the machine to take full loads into sharp turns without sacrificing stability. “I see the future of the Cary-Lift as evolving, just like it always has,” said LaTendresse. “The first machines were in forestry. We evolved into pipe and pole handling. And we’re looking ahead toward diesel-electric hybrids and new applications, trying to find that next new niche.”

DIEFFENBACHER collected donations during its 150th-anniversary celebrations DIEFFENBACHER welcomed numerous business partners to a festive stakeholder event in its specially prepared assembly hall to celebrate its 150th anniversary. In the run-up to the celebrations, DIEFFENBACHER requested that guests refrain from bringing gifts but instead donate to a good cause. The response was tremendous, raising 33,130 euros, which DIEFFENBACHER CEO Christian Dieffenbacher handed over to Petra Köllner-Kleinemeier and Saskia Walker from the COURAGE Foundation for chronically ill children at the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital. “The COURAGE Foundation is a cause close to our hearts and one that we’ve supported for many years,” says Christian Dieffenbacher. “After we sent out the invitations for our anniversary event in the summer, we were often asked about the topic of birthday presents. However, being able to celebrate our anniversary with all our guests was gift enough for us, so we came up with the idea of launching a fundraising appeal for COURAGE,” he states. The COURAGE Foundation aims to give chronically ill children and adolescents more quality and enjoyment of life beyond medical treatment during their hospital stay. It reinforces their courage, strength, confidence and support in fighting their disease. The donations collected by DIEFFENBACHER will help fund an annual two-week vacation camp in the Black Forest for dialysis patients and children and adolescents with kidney and liver transplants. Additionally, the COURAGE Foundation supports several other projects, including “Fit for School,” which aims to enable children to start school with friends of the same age without delays or learning deficits, and the children’s palliative care team in the Rhine-Neckar region. “On behalf of the foundation, I would like to thank DIEFFENBACHER for the donation initiative,” said Petra Köllner-Kleinemeier, Chairwoman of the COURAGE Foundation, during the check presentation on December 7, 2023 at the company’s headquarters in Eppingen, Germany. “I will pass on these thanks to our anniversary guests straight away,” added Dieffenbacher. “We didn’t expect to raise such a large sum of money. Once again, many thanks to all the donors.”
