In this episode of The New Warehouse Podcast, Kevin chats with Andrew Smith, Founder and CEO of Outrider, a pioneer in autonomous yard operations. It’s been five years since Andrew first joined the show, and a lot has changed, both in the industry and at Outrider. The conversation explores how the company has evolved since emerging from stealth mode, how it integrates AI and deep learning into its solution, and why the yard may be one of the most dangerous, overlooked segments in the supply chain. From enhancing safety and sustainability to streamlining operations, Andrew shares how Outrider is automating the yard by creating autonomous electric trucks that maneuver trailers with centimeter-level precision. Closing the Gap Between Transportation and the Warehouse Yard operations have long been overshadowed by automation innovation, but Outrider is changing that. Their focus is on the vital yet hazardous space between over-the-road trucks and the warehouse dock, where containers are shuffled, staged, and prepped for loading and unloading. According to Andrew, “Outrider is the pioneer and leader in autonomous yard operations.” He explains how the company’s electric autonomous trucks receive trailer movement instructions via software and then locate, hitch, maneuver, and position each trailer using onboard sensors and robotic arms. “And the efficiency and safety and sustainability that we bring to the yard have benefits not just to the companies that operate these yards, but we also get the right trailer to the right loading dock at the right time, driving efficiency inside the warehouse.” This isn’t small-scale experimentation. Outrider supports yards with anything from hundreds to thousands of trailer moves per day. Their AI-driven systems eliminate the need for human drivers to perform tight maneuvers in harsh conditions, such as snow, rain, and low visibility. This reduces the risk of accidents, particularly during trailer hookups, which are prone to slip-and-fall injuries. AI in the Physical World: Why Data Makes the Difference Outrider’s evolution since 2020 has been dramatic. With more than $200 million in investment and partnerships with top tech providers, such as NVIDIA, the company has scaled its technology beyond the early proof-of-concept stage. Andrew shares a striking moment from a recent site visit: “It maneuvered in a way that a human would never even think about doing… and placed the trailer with centimeter accuracy.” This ability stems from years of AI training data and reinforcement learning, enabling autonomous vehicles to navigate even unpredictable obstructions, such as a poorly parked pickup truck or a misplaced trailer. The trucks aren’t just smart—they’re safe. “We’ve built up a set of over a dozen proprietary safety mechanisms that lay on top of the AI-driven system.” These safeguards ensure that the vehicles can operate reliably even in mixed environments with people, snowbanks, or unexpected obstacles, such as a plastic bag covering a trailer sensor. Automating Yard Operations Without Leaving People Behind Outrider’s autonomous yard trucks are built on electric platforms by design. “If there was ever an application for electric vehicles, this is it.” These short-range, high-usage vehicles are ideally suited for electrification, enabling opportunistic charging and reducing maintenance costs. Electrification also makes it easier to manage battery size, thanks to the detailed operational data generated by the autonomous system. Human workers remain essential to the operation. Outrider’s solution is built with collaboration in mind. Each truck still features a cab, allowing a worker to take over if needed. “We are creating this ultimate tool and addressing this pain point of constant turnover.” In fact, many customers are deploying automation at the same rate as natural attrition, allowing people to shift to safer, more meaningful roles while still supporting operations. Outrider is already working with companies that operate 20% of all yard trucks in North America, and Andrew is confident that their software is well-positioned to become the new industry standard. “The world’s going electric because it is the superior platform.” Key Takeaways on Automating Yard Operations Outrider automates trailer movement in distribution yards using electric autonomous trucks with centimeter-level precision. AI and real-time trailer tracking eliminate time-consuming searches for misplaced trailers, speeding up yard operations. A built-in robotic arm safely connects and disconnects trailers, reducing the risk of worker injury from hazardous manual tasks. Automating yard operations phases in automation at the pace of workforce attrition, helping companies reduce turnover without layoffs. Outrider’s platform is already being adopted by companies that operate 20% of all yard trucks in North America. Episode 606: Automating yard operations with Outrider

The Top Supply Chain Projects award recognizes innovative case study-type projects that aim to automate, optimize, streamline, and enhance the supply chain. YMX Logistics has been recognized by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine with the 2025 Top Supply Chain Projects Award. This honor highlights supply chain initiatives that drive measurable improvements through innovation, automation, and strategic collaboration. YMX earned the award for significantly improving yard operations at one of the largest and most complex distribution centers for one of the five largest grocery retailers in the U.S. The project addressed chronic inefficiencies, shipment delays, high operating costs, labor instability, and safety risks at a 24/7 distribution center previously managed by another industry provider. “By shifting from a reactive service model to a proactive, data-driven strategy, YMX helped the retailer take control of facility performance, significantly reduce costs, and create a safer, more efficient yard and DC operations,” said Erin Mitchell, Chief Operating Officer of YMX Logistics. The transformation was achieved by implementing YMX’s proprietary yard operating system, YMX OS. YMX OS combines operational expertise with technology enablement, including real-time visibility, standardized processes, and a performance-based framework delivering the highest level of service and optimized yard operations for both the retailer and its third-party providers. “Visibility and collaboration are at the heart of every successful supply chain project,” said Marina Mayer, Editor-in-Chief of Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “YMX’s results-driven partnership model exemplifies the kind of innovation this award celebrates.” 2025 Top Supply Chain Projects winners

Solar-powered systems consist of many parts – from batteries and charge controllers to converters and fuses. Housing all of these components in a single, easy-to-access job box is a very effective way to organize, utilize and transport the equipment around remote areas. Through robust protection from outdoor elements (sunlight, moisture, and debris), investing in a heavy-duty solar job box can also save you money in the long term. Larson Electronics manufactures and designs solar job boxes for industrial, outdoor applications. These units are secured on a skid base for seamless transportation with forklifts and vehicles. Solar panels can be included on the skid base, as well as a genset for backup power. Models with masts are also available for raising equipment in outdoor locations. This solution is recommended for job sites requiring elevated lighting, security, and more. For added protection in rugged environments, our solar job boxes on skid bases are finished with a durable powder coating. This protects the frame and makes the overall system more resilient in outdoor areas.

Preserving the quality of excess inventory stored outdoors can be challenging when it involves seasonal equipment, large and irregularly shaped machinery that is difficult to wrap and move. To safeguard their investment, equipment dealers and OEMs are choosing to protect it against corrosion and UV rays with Daubert Cromwell VCI shrink film, now standard in 20′ wide rolls. Heavy-duty, heat-sealable, puncture-resistant VCI shrink film provides dual protection against corrosion and UV damage to metal stored outdoors. It conforms easily around bulky shapes and irregular sizes to prevent moisture, salt, and other corrosion-causing contaminants from depositing on the metal surface. The film is non-toxic, safe to handle, and completely recyclable. Daubert Cromwell manufactures two types of exterior grade VCI/UV shrink film, both designed to prevent corrosion on ferrous/non-ferrous metal: X-O Wrap barrier film Opaque, white, 10 mil thick, standard in 20′ x 100′ rolls. Intended for large and outdoor barrier wrap of construction equipment, aerospace/aviation parts, rental equipment on dealer lots, large and roughly handled assemblies, and export shipments. Flexible shrink film offers a less expensive solution to crating. Corrosion protection lasts up to six months outdoors; 12 months minimum indoors. Premium Metal-Guard® shrink wrap Transparent, 6 mil, Daubert® blue, standard in rolls 20′ x 100′ and 20′ x 165′. The film replaces less-functional, non-VCI tarps and covers. Easy to handle, safe to use conventional heat shrink equipment. Film offers an economical, effective shrink wrap option for in-process components and large parts needing corrosion protection during storage and shipment. Both films are entirely compatible with Daubert Cromwell VCI devices that deliver corrosion protection to specific areas inside the wrapped machinery, such as Daubrite® emitters, foam pads, chips, and VCI paper. When the equipment is ready to go back into service, simply remove the VCI film and any other supplemental VCI devices. No further cleaning or rework is required

Technology to be integrated with the full line of honda generator models by end of 2020 Honda Power Equipment, a business unit of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is taking a bold step in generator safety by equipping all models in its portable generator lineup with CO-MINDER™, a new advanced carbon monoxide (CO) detection system designed to help protect users from injury or death from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. The Honda CO-MINDER™ system continuously measures carbon monoxide levels in the air near the generator and automatically shuts down the unit before detected CO reaches a dangerous level. Honda Power Equipment is first in the industry to commit to installing CO detection systems on its full line of generator models. Millions of customers depend on Honda generators for work, home, and play—tailgating, camping, on-the-job—and for emergency home backup during power outages. Generators must be used outdoors and away from windows and doors to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and deadly gas. Even outdoors, if there is no wind, it is possible for CO to accumulate to life-threatening levels in certain locations, such as under the tongue of a fifth wheel recreational vehicle. Honda Power Equipment will roll out the CO-MINDER™ technology on existing generator models throughout 2020, starting in July with four models—the EU1000i and EU3000iS Super Quiet Series inverter generators for work, home, and recreational applications; the Economy Series EG4000 open-frame unit for home backup and workplace power; and the EB10000 Industrial Series The Brain Behind the Honda CO-MINDER™ Carbon Monoxide Detection System The Honda CO-MINDER™ carbon monoxide detection system incorporates a robust, fast-reacting sensor that continuously monitors for carbon monoxide in the air near the generator. If the sensor detects a CO level at or exceeding 800 parts per million (ppm) at a given time, or an average of 400 ppm for 10 minutes (per Portable Generators Manufacturers’ Association [PGMA] G300-2018 standards), it triggers the generator to shut down automatically. A safety light on the main panel notifies the user that a buildup of carbon monoxide caused the generator to shut down. Honda designed the CO-MINDER™ system to be fast-acting, reducing nuisance shutdowns from false positives. Slower CO sensing systems must respond to dangers at a lower CO concentration in order to react in time to shut down the generator. Lower, temporary concentrations of CO can occur in certain conditions, such as when a gust of wind blows exhaust back toward the sensor, creating a false positive, a shutdown, and an inconvenience to the user. Honda CO-MINDER™ is an improvement over those systems. The Honda CO-MINDER™ carbon monoxide detection system is built with a comprehensive range of safety features. The system is not intended to be overridden or tampered with, and the sensors are designed to work even if they are accidentally blocked. The sensors, with the widest temperature operating range of any existing CO monitors for generators, match the design running temperatures of Honda generators, allowing for use anywhere in the U.S. Both moisture and dust resistant, the sensors are designed for years of use. Further, the generator sensor system automatically tests itself and is equipped with a built-in warning, alerting the user to replace the sensors prior to the end of life. Finally, the sensors conform to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) PGMA G300-2018 quality standard established for carbon monoxide monitors for generators. “At Honda, Safety for Everyone is our commitment to incorporate industry-leading safety features into all of our product lines, whether they’re cars, motorcycles, jets, or outdoor power equipment,” said Will Walton, Vice President of Honda Power Equipment. “Our CO-MINDER™ carbon monoxide detection system is designed to help ensure that everyone who operates a Honda generator can do so with increased confidence, providing users, friends, and families with reliable, portable power and peace-of-mind protection.” Labels on the Honda generator models equipped with the CO-MINDER™ carbon monoxide detection system contain additional safety information, such as an exhaust directional safety warning decal, an anti-tamper message, and information on restarting the generator after an automatic CO-related shutdown. In addition, a portable generator should never be plugged into a standard outlet. A safe connection starts with a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. The switch cuts off the utility power while the generator operates, and powers only selected circuits. When utility power is restored, the user disconnects the generator from the transfer switch so that power is not fed back to the utility power source (thereby preventing injury to a utility worker). The Honda generator line offers a range of wattages and other innovative features, including inverter technology that provides clean, stable power, protecting against damaging power surges, large fuel tanks, full-frame protection, and electric starters. “As a leader in the portable generator industry, Honda Power Equipment has been highly supportive of the safety standards adopted by ANSI/PGMA G300-2018. In 2020, we are proud to be the industry’s first manufacturer to commit to installing CO detection devices on 100 percent of our portable generators,” added Walton. “CO-MINDER™ technology exemplifies Honda’s corporate commitment to providing industry-leading products and safety features for all.” A Closer Look: First Honda Generators with CO-MINDER™ Carbon Monoxide Detection System Super Quiet Series Models The Honda EU1000i is the perfect solution for scenarios where basic power and ultra-lightweight are required. Weighing in at 28.7 pounds, the EU1000i can easily be carried and conveniently stored (but not operated) in small recreational vehicle compartments. The unit also features a two-tiered noise dampening system that reduces noise to 50 dB(A)—quieter than normal speech, which is approximately 60 dB(A)—at rated load and can run 3.0 to 6.8 hours on a single tank of fuel, depending on the load. The Honda EU3000iS model is one of the smallest, quietest generators capable of starting and running most modern 13,500 BTU rooftop recreational vehicle (RV) air conditioners and other RV appliances. Equipped with a large 3.4-gallon fuel tank and electric-start capability, this model also doubles as a home backup unit to power a furnace, refrigerator,
